This activity will provide improved diagnostic confidence for physicians and other healthcare professionals by increasing clinical knowledge related to the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of hyperthyroidism and Graves’ disease. Emphasis will be placed on decreasing time to diagnosis through better understanding of available testing technologies and observation of patient clinical presentations. Morbidity assessments will provide credence to the importance of early and accurate diagnosis.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for medical professionals who have a clinical interest in thyroid disorders as seen in the following medical specialties: endocrinology, primary care (IM, FP, GP), obstetrics/gynecology, cardiology, pediatrics, laboratory medicine, nuclear medicine, ophthalmology, neurology, psychiatry, and sleep medicine.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the various causes of hyperthyroidism.
  2. Describe the diagnostic tools available for hyperthyroidism and Graves’ disease.
  3. Review a patient’s history, clinical presentation, and blood chemistries to diagnose Graves’ disease.
  4. Recognize the extrathyroidal signs and systemic manifestations associated with early versus advancing disease.
  5. Differentiate between the pathophysiologies of autoimmune vs. non-autoimmune thyroid disease.
  6. Describe the alternative treatments for Graves’ disease.
  7. Discuss the May 24, 2011 update titled "ATA/AACE Guidelines: Hyperthyroidism and Other Causes of Thyrotoxicosis", and the effect this has on clinical practice.
